Hurricane Katrina Relief
Hi I am Mari Richardson, Vice President and owner of Ryan Machinery & Equipment, Inc in Burlingame, California. My 7-year-old son started a project to get supplies to the victims and evacuees of Hurricane Katrina. This grew into an initiative to send donated supplies by truck to the affected areas.
I got in touch with Mayors of surrounding cities to find out what types of supplies they needed. We started off accepting donations of clothing, food, baby supplies, household items at our Newark warehouse and several drop-off locations around the Bay Area. The plan was to fill and send one donated truck and, if the response was positive, possibly raise money to rent, fill, and send a second one behind the first. The response has been truly amazing and overwhelming.
In one week the drop-off locations became overloaded with supplies. As a result we’re only accepting donations at our Newark warehouse and are no longer accepting clothing. We also got the attention of several local media outlets and our story was televised and written about.
Together with the efforts of my sister and my father, Alfredo Pacheco (Process Equipment International, LLC) as well as countless volunteers and donations from an endless amount of others wanting to DO something to help, we feel we can really make a difference. We are not a non-profit, we are not an organization we are just people helping people.
We started out thinking we could fill one, maybe two trucks. We have since sent out 8 semi truckloads of supplies. Now we have at least ten truckloads worth of donations at our warehouse, waiting to be shipped. This really demonstrates how much our community wants to help those in need on the opposite coast.
Please check back often since these needs are changing every day and we would like to continue our effort in assisting the survivors of Hurricane Katrina.
